BOOK BY BLURB: 1984 BY GEORGE ORWELL
author: George Orwell
Edition: Signet Classic, printed in the USA
This edition also features a wonderful afterword from Erich Fromm.
“The year 1984 has come and gone, but George Orwell’s prophetic, nightmarish vision of 1949 of the world we were becoming is timelier than ever. 1984 is still the great modern classic of “negative utopia”- a startlingly original and haunting novel that creates an imaginary world that is completely convincing, from the first sentence to the last four words. No one can deny the novel’s hold on the imaginations of whole generations, or the power of its admonitions- a power that seems to grow, not lessen with the passage of time.”
There are a lot of things that can be said about George Orwell’s “modern classic”. The plot is of course a good starting point, but I this blurb chose to highlight the book’s lasting impression to the readers who experienced it. Because the book is not just about what happened, but what might happen and will happen if we fail to heed the novel’s message. Potential reader today who are familiar with dystopia in their books would find a more urgent and lasting message in 1984.
My verdict? Heed the blurb!
